Avengers Campus is a Marvel Cinematic Universe–themed area located at Disney California Adventure. The Marvel-themed areas or “lands” will be developed simultaneously at the three parks and inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers Campus is inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring attractions based on characters originating from Marvel Comics and appearing in MCU media. They are designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, in collaboration with Marvel Studios and Marvel Themed Entertainment.

Opened on June 4, 2021 on the former site of A Bug’s Land, the area is anchored around an Avengers campus located on the former restricted grounds of a Stark Industries and Strategic Scientific Reserve complex. Attractions and restaurants include Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!, Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, the Ancient Sanctum, and the Pym Test Kitchen.

Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure is centered around an Avengers campus located on the former shared grounds of a Stark Industries plant and Strategic Scientific Reserve complex. The area takes up the space previously occupied by A Bug’s Land—with Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure using the same show building that previously housed the It’s Tough to Be a Bug! attraction—as well as absorbing the nearby Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! attraction that was previously designated in Hollywood Land.

Based on three different continents, the Marvel-themed areas will be defined as the “Super Hero campus” of their specific region, that will form guests to become heroes. Each area will feature mostly different sets of attractions and entertainment, while being strongly interconnected with each other by sharing a common narrative. These three parks all hosted a Marvel-themed seasonal event in the past.

However, they will instead take place in the “Marvel Theme Park Universe”, an alternate universe parallel to it within the Marvel Multiverse, in which the Blip and related ensuing events introduced in Avengers: Infinity War did not occur.

Due to a 1994 contract with Universal Parks & Resorts, Disney cannot use the “Marvel” name in the park’s branding or attractions. A Bug’s Land closed on September 5, 2018, to make way for the new area. At the 2017 D23 Expo, Disney announced the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction would be joined by Spider-Man and the Avengers as part of the new immersive superhero-themed area at the park.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! is an accelerated drop tower dark ride attraction at the Disney California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort. Based on the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (specifically those from the Guardians of the Galaxy films), it depicts Rocket recruiting guests to attempt to free the remaining Guardians of the Galaxy from display within the Collector’s fortress. It opened on May 27, 2017, to coincide with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The attraction uses the same infrastructure and ride system as the previous attraction, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. It features several actors of the cast from the Marvel Studios film series reprising their characters. While the attraction is inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it is set in a separate shared universe along with the other Avengers Campus attractions.

The attraction is based in the Collector’s fortress-esque collection called the Tivan Collection, as seen in the film Guardians of the Galaxy. The Collector (Taneleer Tivan) is showing off his latest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy, in customized display cases. However, Rocket has secretly escaped his case and asks the guests for help. Guests then board a gantry lift, where they help Rocket try to free the other Guardians.

After guests are seated in the gantry lift, the Collector tells the riders that “this is the moment you’ve been waiting for.” However, Rocket unplugs the system and inserts Quill’s walkman, queued up to one of six classic rock songs. The lift quickly rises up to the generator room where Rocket blows it up, opening the cages and freeing the team, but also cutting the power to the gantry lift.

Rocket tries to regain control as the lift accelerates up and down, and guests see the Guardians entangled in various situations, as well as getting a brief view of Disneyland. As soon as the on-ride camera takes photos of the riders, the lift begins to drop once again.

Rocket finally restores power and the lift drops down to show the Guardians reunited along with Mantis and Cosmo the Spacedog. Quill and Gamora thank the guests for their help, but as the lift resets itself, Drax is heard asking why they are thanking them as all the guests did was sit through the whole ordeal and did not actually do any fighting.

As guests leave the gantry lift and exit down a corridor, the sounds of the escaping creatures can be heard. The Collector can be heard over the intercom, upset over the loss of the Guardians and his creatures. Howard the Duck can also occasionally be heard, mocking the Collector’s misfortune and bidding guests farewell.

In August 2017, it was announced that the attraction would receive a new experience during Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort called Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. The experience is offered after sunset each night from early September through October 31. The storyline of Monsters After Dark takes place chronologically after the events of Mission Breakout!; the Guardians have just escaped but accidentally left Groot behind. Rocket returns and has guests distract all of the escaped creatures so he can find and rescue Groot.

Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure
Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure (stylized as WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure) is an interactive screen ride at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, California. Guests will join the Worldwide Engineering Brigade (WEB) and Spider-Man. Using WEB’s latest invention, the WEB Slinger vehicle, guests will help capture the Spider-Bots that have wreaked havoc on the Avengers Campus. The attraction is a blend of physical sets and virtual environments.

Guests enter the main headquarters of WEB, and guided to the lab by the artificial intelligence Sharon, who introduces them to one of the lead WEB engineers, Peter Parker. Peter reveals that the guests will be testing out the new WEB Slinger vehicles that allows them to shoot webs like Spider-Man. As he is explaining this, one of the program’s newest inventions, a robotic helper called the Spider-Bot, malfunctions and begins endlessly replicating itself as they tear down the facility. If they are not stopped, they could destroy the rest of Avengers Campus.

Peter insists that Sharon does not need to contact Tony for help. Sharon instead contacts Spider-Man. Instantly, Peter receives a notification on his phone and leaves the room to “find” Spider-Man. He soon returns in his Spider-Man outfit. Sharon offers to contact The Avengers, but Spider-Man instead recruits the guests to help. He and Sharon instruct the guests to use the WEB Slinger vehicles so they can team up to stop the self-replicating Spider-Bots.

After guests enter the vehicle, Spider-Man opens the doors to the WEB prototype garage and instructs them to web up and capture all the loose Spider-Bots as he seals off the exits. The Spider-Bots then enter through the tunnels and into Pym Test Kitchen. One of the Spider-Bots becomes giant after being exposed to Pym Particles, but Spider-Man manages to tie it up with his web and kick it into an area testing alien technology.

Spider-Man and the guests then enter the Collector’s Tivan Collection. While battling the Spider-Bots, Spider-Man is captured and placed in one of the Collector’s display cases, but manages to escape before he loses consciousness.

As they approach the Quinjet Hangar, Sharon informs the guests that the giant Spider-Bot survived and is now glowing green. Spider-Man noticed that the green bots explode when they are hit, and believes they could trigger a chain reaction if they focus on them. After stopping the Spider-Bots from hijacking the Quinjet, Spider-Man and the guests corner the giant, green Spider-Bot in the back of the hangar and cause it to explode, which destroys the rest of the Spider-Bots in the process. Spider-Man and Sharon thank the guests for their help as the exit the facility.

Doctor Strange: Journey into the Mystic Arts
Doctor Strange: Journey into the Mystic Arts is a stage show on board the Disney Magic cruise ship as part of a promotional event titled “Marvel Day at Sea”. A version of the show, entitled Ancient Sanctum, is present at the Avengers Campus attraction at the Disney California Adventure park. Recruits are invited to a secluded location right outside the bustling city of Los Angeles. Doctor Strange is inviting recruits to discover the ancient ruins and come see for themselves to learn more about the mystical details revolving around the Orb of Cagliosto.

Doctor Strange invites the guests to discover the world of the Mystic Arts. Guests will be transported from the Disney Cruise Line to the New York Sanctum Sanctorum, the residence of Doctor Strange. Young apprentices play a special role in the experience, as Doctor Strange calls upon them to learn the fundamentals of the Mystic Arts. After completion of their mystic arts training, the students put their new skills to the test when suddenly an epic battle against Dormammu inside the Dark Dimension ensues.

Disney California Adventure
Disney California Adventure Park is a theme park located at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. The 72-acre (29 ha) park is themed after the history and culture of California, which celebrates the adventure of the state through the use of various Disney, Pixar and Marvel Studios properties. The concept of a theme park dedicated to California arose from a meeting of Disney executives in 1995, construction of the park began in June 1998 and was completed by early 2001.

The park opened on February 8, 2001 as Disney’s California Adventure Park and is the second of two theme parks built at the Disneyland Resort complex, after Disneyland Park. Disney spent the next several years incrementally adding new rides, shows, and attractions, and implementing other promotions aimed at boosting attendance.

In 2007, Disney announced a major overhaul of the park consisting of new expansion as well as re-construction of existing areas of the park. Construction lasted for five years and was completed in stages, culminating with the opening of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land along with the re-dedication of the park in June 2012. According to the Themed Entertainment Association, the park hosted approximately 9.9 million guests in 2018, making it the 12th-most visited theme park in the world that year.
