The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal (MUTEM) is a cultural venue that exhibits the most representative of the culture of tequila and mezcal through exhibitions, conferences, concerts, gastronomy shows and other cultural events located in Plaza Garibaldi de México DF
The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal Garibaldi, is part of the new cultural equipment of the Garibaldi Square and is a reference for the renovation of this area of the Historic Center. Among its main objectives are the dissemination and promotion of the heritage and cultural identity of Mexico, the attraction of new visitors, national and foreign tourists.
History
It was built in 2010 on the occasion of the remodeling of the square. The peculiar design of the museum is shown in contrast to its surroundings through a striking translucent glass facade decorated with images of penguins of maguey (plant from which tequila is extracted) and mariachi silhouettes that allude to the characteristic music ensembles Mexican that can be found in the place.
Interior
It has an area of 375 m² and is divided into three sections where the history and characteristics of the various types of tequila and mezcal that are also for sale are exhibited, in addition to a section in which a tasting and tasting of the Different types of tequila, mezcal and maguey products.
Cultural Space

The MUTEM is a dynamic and versatile cultural space in which through exhibitions, gatherings, conferences, concerts, presentations of Mexican distillates, gastronomy and other cultural manifestations, the culture of tequilas and mezcals with related themes is sought.
Our main objective is to present the products resulting from the distillation processes of the different varieties of agave. There is a wide variety of audiences that look for the values, traditions and knowledge of 100% Mexican customs, where we highlight the value of the products, which are of quality. On the other hand in the MUTEM you can enjoy different elements, which make important appointments as heritage of the intangible humanity of Mexico and elements of national identity.
On the first floor of the building is the Museum dedicated to the production of Tequila and Mezcal, distilled beverages which have international recognition and are proudly Mexican.
On the other hand you will find the history of Mariachi and Garibaldi Square, a journey that takes us to the origin of our national popular culture. In this exhibition space the collection of tequila and mezcal bottles is shown, which has more than 300 objects.
The museum combines various exhibition media to explain the processes, history and some interesting facts regarding the above mentioned topics.
Architectural concept
The building located in Garibaldi square is a modern, minimalist style building. Clean and straight lines are inserted into the architecture of the square, allowing historical buildings to retain their identity. Therefore, the proposals for services, image, logo, interactive that are developed as part of the museum and its activities follow this same line.
The neutrality of the building and its design elements allow tangible and intangible heritage objects to be the focus of speech throughout the museum. That is, the dynamism and versatility that the theme of the museum entails are sufficient to create a living space of culture and dissemination of the national heritage, allowing the building’s location to refer to that character of the national identity linked to the party. , music and folklore that characterizes us.
The Canteen
La Cantina del Museo is a contemporary Mexican canteen where a wide variety of tequilas and mezcal are offered to taste.
The Terrace
The Terrace of the Museum, Restaurant-Bar, is located on the top floor offering the visitor an exquisite selection of Mexican dishes, in addition to enjoying a panoramic view of the Garibaldi Square and other monuments of the Historic Center of the city such as the domes of the Cathedral and the Latin American Tower.
The Store
The Museum Store is a place where high quality products are offered, related to agave, tequila culture and mezcal, it is a showcase where the work of our Mexican artisans is exalted, in addition to recognizing small producers to be able to spread distillate agave productions that exist in the national territory.
Exhibitions
Presentation of tequilas and mezcales
Presentation of tequilas and mezcales is a proposal of the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal whose objective is to generate new audiences for MUTEM and for the producers of the drink through an event that includes the guided visit to the museum, presentation of the product and tasting of it .
Temporary exhibitions
As part of the cultural offer of MUTEM, the Mayahuel Hall hosts temporary exhibitions with themes related mainly to tequila, mezcal, agave and mariachi.
Social gatherings
Musical gatherings are part of the museum’s cultural and academic program. They are a concept created by MUTEM and aim to spread the traditional music of Mariachi. They are educational concerts taught by academics and musicians who are experts in the history of traditional Mexican music that will take us on a journey through their evolution.
Mayahuel Hall
Multipurpose room where different events are held such as: presentations, tastings of tequilas and mezcal, conferences, guided tastings, concerts, book presentations and temporary exhibitions among other recreational activities.
Neighborhood tours
Tours of the neighborhood are a proposal of MUTEM, where we invite our visitors to participate in guided thematic tours in the Historic Center of Mexico City. The tours speak of the heritage of the City through various routes that will transport us in time and culminate in the visit to the MUTEM. The tours are taught by a specialist in history.
