Brera Design District
Discover the new Brera Experience. The best way to discover and get to know the district’s places and secrets. Brera Design District also features a selection of the best commercial activities, i.e. those that best represent the identity of this historic district of Milan between design, lifestyle, food, art and culture. The Brera Design District offers, as always, a large number of events that animate the neighborhood and which alternate with the many design showrooms hosted here.

Brera Design District attracts the largest number of events and is the most visited and most representative district of the Fuorisalone. Born with the 2010 edition, the Brera Design Week has been able to increase over the years the number and quality of the events it hosts, for many, Fuorisalone means Brera and Brera Design Week is the reference platform, open to collaboration with companies and designers thanks to dedicated project formats.

Brera has the charm of the Milan art district and has a somewhat Parisian, bohemian personality. When you stroll through its streets, especially in April during the Fuorisalone, you can breathe an extravagant, young and international atmosphere. Brera is an iconic place. It has always been the bohemian place in Milan par excellence, where you can breathe that artsy atmosphere, thanks also to the Academy and the studios of photographers and painters. Now Brera is increasingly linked to design and this passage has respected the creative and special soul of the neighborhood, indeed it has brought new life.

Brera Design District, underline and strengthen the importance of Milan as an international showcase for the design system that sees its most important moment in its design week. With its showrooms, shops and locations, Brera Design District has become the reference point for discovering the most significant languages and trends in design and planning. A neighborhood that, thanks to its innate propensity for experimentation, is the center of the Fuorisalone appointments, a reality that moves Milan and its energies like few other initiatives can. Brera Design District renews for the sixth consecutive year the participation of a historic district in an event such as the design week that blends culture and design: a mix of excellences that belong to Milan, its history and its image in the world.

Brera Design District reaches its sixth edition. The Milanese district, the creative and commercial heart of the city, extends from the Bastioni di Porta Nuova to via Broletto, from via Legnano to via Montenapoleone, following the boundaries defined by the DUC Brera (Urban Districts of Commerce). On the strength of these results, it hosts a busy calendar of events and proposes a format that includes: a theme, the “Design Lessons” award, a series of meetings, special projects and cultural initiatives.

“Progetto Forma Identità” is the theme of 2015 and is based on the concept of recognizability. To create an identity, it is essential to invest in training, the only way to develop design skills. In fact, there is no identity without a project; and what unites the two expressions of this equation are training, learning, knowledge. The theme was born from the desire to question what identity is today, a concept that has weakened due to an overexposure of images to the detriment of a design culture. In the context of design, reflecting on this assumption means digging into the roots of an invention to closely study the construction processes that lead to the development of creative uniqueness.

This year our ambassadors are: the designer Luca Nichetto, present with three events in Brera, the artist Patrick Tuttofuoco who creates an installation in Piazzetta Brera and the architecture studio Piuarch, based in via Palermo, which proposes the project ” Milan among the gardens “.

In continuity with last year, Brera Design District presents the second edition of the “Design Lessons” award for those who have been able to better interpret the values underlying the chosen theme. For “Progetto Forma Identità” the prize is assigned to Martino Gamper, a designer who integrates art, design and craftsmanship into his work. Gamper has distinguished himself for a unique design method and for having translated a deep knowledge of the history of design into original creations, precisely by declining the culture of design into a well-defined identity..

This year, during the Fuorisalone, the designer Luca Nichetto is present in the Brera Design District with the Swedish brand Kinnarps with an installation that interprets the trend report on the new way of living the office (Largo Treves 5, entrance from via Solferino). The designer then presents BonBon, a series of mirrored glass coffee tables for the Czech brand Verreum (via dell’Orso 12), while in the Foscarini Spazio Brera showroom (via Fiori Chiari 28) he exhibits a new version of the Plass family of lamps and the new Kurage table lamp, designed with Nendo.

Many foreign group exhibitions have chosen this area: Austrian Design Pioneers-General Consulate of Austria (Pelota, via Palermo 10), Belgium is Design at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (via Brera 28), Berlin Design Selection-Dynamo Design Berlin eV (via Goito 3); in addition to international brands such as the Japanese Karimoku New Standard (via Palemo 1), the Brazilian Sollos (via Solferino 40), the Chinese of Pinwo Design Company (via del Carmine 9) and Lighting Innovation Design Center (via Clerici 10), the Swedes Ateljé Lyktan (Corso Garibaldi 117), the Dutch eQ + (via del Carmine11). The Swiss from Ecal – University of Art & Design in Lausanne – reconfirm themselves at Spazio Orso 16 (via dell’Orso16).

Thanks to the uniqueness of the curatorial program and the continually expanding success of previous editions, 5VIE art+design is now recognized internationally as an important new hub of cutting-edge design.

The name “5VIE Art+Design” gathers the three main concepts of the project: history, culture and innovation. Thanks to the work of the past few years for building a strong brand identity and new communication strategies, a bunch of streets is now a urban project of international interest. This year, with a special focus on one-of-a-kind pieces, art design, and the cross- contamination among the various arts, aims to build on this growing success and embrace experimentation more openly than ever and to cultivate an even more international presence. Working as always in close contact with curators and designers and concentrating on clusters of creativity, 5VIE is increasingly establishing itself as a meeting place for generating connections between different areas, investing in research, in the selection of projects, and in their final implementation. As such, our identity as a true “integrated design district” becomes crystal clear.

During the Milan Design Week 2015, the city district of 5VIE becomes the beating and living heart of the Milanese project culture. Superstudio Group celebrates 15 years as a protagonist of international design in Milan with the new format SUPERDESIGN SHOW, an evolutionary project that takes the place and incorporates the success of the “Temporary Museum for New Design”.

On display at Superstudio Più on 10,000 square meters of exhibition spaces, the most interesting Italian and international production, but also life-style projects and proposals that have design as a starting point, to hypothesize the present and the future of our homes, places of work and knowledge, of the urban habitat, of our lives.

An original, large, strong logo, designed by the art-director and artist Flavio Lucchini, to tell the new era of design at Superstudio. SUPERDESIGN SHOW, to summarize how design has now surpassed itself, and at the same time conventions, prejudices, categories, hierarchies, limits, boundaries and even physical laws, sometimes daring the impossible.

The lesson of the great masters of post-modern, from Ettore Sottsass to Alessandro Mendini, who since the 1970s has given impetus to the imagination, has become the verb of contemporary design, capable of making tradition coexist with eclecticism, experimentation with quality.

After having opened the doors to the Fuori Salone events in 2001 with Design Connection, after having completely revolutionized the exhibition concept with the sophisticated formula of the Temporary Museum for New Design in 2009, for 2015, the year of the Expo, Superstudio therefore gives new responses to market trends, to the change in the world of design, to the widening of horizons, to the army of creatives 2.0, with the new name and the new format SUPERDESIGN SHOW.

A large container that faces current realities with renewed planning. On the one hand, it preserves the fascination of the Temporary Museum by entrusting some international brands with the task of exploring the last frontiers of creativity and narrating them in emotional paths that enchant and surprise the visitor like a sensorial show. On the other hand, it opens up more and more to research, to scouting, to the selection of creative forces that experiment with innovative solutions to improve our lives. It also offers thematic exhibitions that offer a cross-section of complementary worlds, still not too valued and explored, such as furnishing textiles or environments for children.

Art, as always, is intertwined with design at Superstudio: this year it is present with a selection of unique art-design pieces for our homes and installations that can be “used” by entering or sitting on it.
