The Saitama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art (埼玉県立近代美術館 Saitama Prefectural Art Center) is a museum located in Tokiwa, Urawa-ku, Saitama Prefecture. It is in the park of Kitaurawa Park. The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama opened amid the lush greenery of Kita-Urawa Park on November 3, 1982.Known as MOMAS (The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama), it is the first art museum the architect Kurokawa Kisho designed.In addition to displaying our collection of fine artworks from modern Western masters to contemporary Japanese artists, we also hold special exhibitions focusing on unique themes.Adding children’s programs and opportunities for citizens to show their works, MOMAS is full of exciting ways for you to get closer and enjoy art.

On May 10, 1957 in the era of former Urawa city, the Saitama prefectural art museum which will be the predecessor predecessor opened as the first prefectural art museum on the other side of the lagoon (the stage of the Urawa painter’s success). Although it was used as a venue for the Saitama prefectural art exhibition, the exhibition room of the Saitama Kaikan which was newly built in 1966 played the role as it became small due to the increase in the winning works. The prefectural art museum which lost the main role is effectively closed after it was used at the Urawa municipal museum building hall and Urawa civil engineering office building office building and it became the management office of Bishouma Park and then dismantled by rebuilding It was done.

The Saitama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art (MOMAS), opened in 1982 in the lush Kitaurawa Park. From collections of overseas masters such as Monet, Chagall, Picasso to Japanese contemporary artists, we exhibit excellent works of art. In addition to organizing a special exhibition with unique themes from time to time, I also introduce a lot of good design chairs that I can sit freely.

In addition, we hold museum concerts, lecture meetings, workshops where parents and children can participate, so that we can become more familiar with art. You can also enjoy the museum slowly in a museum shop with art books and goods and a restaurant that serves authentic Italian cuisine.

However, as the exhibition room at Saitama Kaikan became too small, modern artworks were collected in Saitama Prefectural Museum in Omiya Park, so the voice of “a full-fledged art museum in Urawa” was raised and Saitama prefecture has a collection of works We decided the construction plan of a new museum which will be newly constructed, and in Saitama prefecture modernity (Kita Urawa Park) which was established at the site of Saitama University (formerly formerly Urawa High School) which moved to November 3, 1982 (1969) It opened as a museum. Urawa Kita Park is located adjacent to the south side. Until then, we transferred the modern art work which was stored in the Saitama prefectural museum to the hotel. The building is designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa. This was the first time Kurokawa designed a museum in a museum.

It is the basic policy of the museum to collect outstanding works of both inside and outside, which influenced Saitama’s modern art. For that reason, of the 3,000 works in the collection, about 2000 items are occupied by artists of Saitama prefecture. Works by Eiji and Tanaiuchi Ryojiro famous as Urawa painters are also on display. You can sit in numerous masterpieces in the hall, also known as a museum in the chair.

Document reading room
On the 3rd floor of the hotel, there is a reading room with art materials.
The material reading room was established for the purpose of exposing the materials (research materials for holding works collections and exhibitions) held by the hotel to the general public.
Everyone can use it free of charge if you are using materials from our library reading room.

Kitaurawa Park
The Saitama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art is located in Kitaurawa Park.
Three-dimensional works of various materials by foreign and domestic writers are exhibited in the area around the museum and the “sculpture square” in the park.

Wind bench
In cooperation with the Saitama Prefecture branch of the Japanese Garden Association, a masonry bench “Form of the Wind” was established in November 2017. This bench, which craftworkers assembled by combining traditional techniques and contemporary ingenuity, will be for a limited time until the end of March 2018.

Music fountain
There is a music fountain near the center of the park.
The fountain, which moves with music at a fixed time, is entertaining people.
