The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma (群馬県立近代美術館) opened in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, in 1974. The collection includes works by Monet, Renoir, and Soga Jasoku.
The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma opened in the autumn of 1974. The activities of the museum include the acquisition and preservation of artworks, art research and study, organization of permanent and temporary exhibitions, gallery talks, lectures and other educational programs. In 1994, museum facilities were expanded with Museum Shop and Restaurant. In 1998, Contemporary Art Wing, designed specifically for exhibitions of contemporary art, was added. In 2008, outdated facilities have been renovated to make the museum more functional and pleasant to visit. We will continue to create a museum suited to the twenty-first century.
Major features of the museum collection are the Koho-an Inoue Collection made up of ancient Japanese and Chinese art, and a group of works by artists born in Gunma, including Fukuzawa Ichiro, Yamaguchi Kaoru, and Tsuruoka Masao. It also contains a wide range of modern Japanese and modern Western art, contemporary art and textile.
As the “Meiji 100 Centennial Memorial Project” as a state-owned land of the former Tokyo Iwaso Factory “in the eastern part of Takasaki City (in addition to this” Nippon Kayaku Takasaki Plant “” Japan Atomic Energy Research and Development Organization Takasaki Quantum Applied Research Laboratory (formerly the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Takasaki Laboratory) “is located in the prefectural park” Gumma Forest “as an attached facility, together with the Gunma Prefectural History Museum. It opened in October 1974.
As the name of the museum, we collect and display contemporary and contemporary art at home and abroad as well as collecting and exhibiting artworks of painters from Gunma prefecture as the only prefectural art museum in Gunma prefecture (before opening the Gunma prefectural Tatebayashi Art Museum) ing. It also houses Inoue Anoue Collection consisting of 229 pieces of ancient Japanese and Chinese art collection collected by Inoue Koichiroro, which includes 2 important cultural properties.
Building design is Isozaki Shin. Evaluation is also high in terms of architecture, and it is often referred to as the representative work of Isozaki with the Kitakyushu municipal museum.
In the 1990s, we have been doing expansion and renovation twice, but since we followed the basic design of the building and extended it to the back of the building, the appearance from Gumma’s forest / lawn open space is almost as originally constructed.
Permanent exhibitions:Artworks from the permanent collection of over 1700 items are kept on display throughout the year. The content of the permanent exhibition is chosen to fit particular themes and changed from time to time.
Temporary exhibitions:These exhibitions are made up of works of modern and contemporary art on loan from both Japanese and foreign collections and organized on a variety of themes. The Gunma Biennale for Young Artists is held on a continuing basis.
Educational programs:The museum staff provides gallery talks to museum visitors for better understanding of works. The museum also presents exhibitions for children and other special programs, organizes lectures and work shops.
