In the Museum “Permanent Exhibition Room”, “Yoshihara Yoshitomi Memorial Hall” and “Art Information Room”, we have special stamps of foxes, raccoons and rabbits.

There were three major types of art that especially interested us: (1) Art from the Edo period onward by artists who were either natives of Mie or had a close relationship with Mie. (2) Paintings from the Meiji period onward that show the development of modern oil paintings in Japan, or paintings by foreign artists who exerted a strong influence over modern Japanese art. (3) Sketches, studies, watercolors, and other documents that give insight into the creative undertakings of certain key artists. After Mie Prefecture became the sister state of Valencia, Spain, in 1992, the museum also began collecting works by important Spanish artists.

It opened in 1982. The first director is an art historian who later served as the director of the Yokohama Museum of Art Teruro. Approximately 230,000 visitors have visited since the beginning of the opening period in half a year, but the number of visitors since then has stabilized at 120,000 a year.

The building is based on the design of Fujie Building Office, construction by Taisei Corporation. In 1998, it was selected as one hundred public buildings.

The prefectural art museum establishment plan began in 1972 when the Council of Culture issued a report on the name of the “prefectural art museum”. After that, Mie Prefectural Art Museum was established in April 1982 after the establishment of the foundation · establishment of the museum building preparation room, etc. In fact it opened September 25 of the same year.

In 2005, he held a work exhibition by Yoshihiko Wada, a painter from Mie Prefecture, but after the allegations that Wada’s work was plagiarism of an Italian painter, Alberto Sugi’s work, emerged, the next 2006 On 5th June, I gave an apology in the name of the director. The Wada Yoshihiko Exhibition was held at the Mie Prefectural Art Museum, and was also held at Shibuya Ward Shoto Museum of Art and Tsukuba Museum of Art, Ibaraki Prefecture, and the creation of catalogs was also made by the editing of these three buildings.

The starting point for all activities at the museum is a wide and deep research on art.

As well as preparing for the planning of the exhibition, we are carrying out survey and research activities with particular themes centered on collections and artists and art materials related to Mie prefecture from peacetime.

In addition to the research as a museum, curators have research themes in their respective specialized fields, which serve as research institutes and furthermore as the basis for the operation of art museums as educational institutions with close ties with society.

The results of these surveys and studies are presented through exhibitions, work catalogs, research theses and others.
