Evolution on the Way to Enlightenment
November 29, 2021 – January 30, 2022

The Museum dedicate the 3rd edition of its “On the way to enlightenment ” series to the amazing species that have marked the history of life, during an unprecedented, poetic nocturnal journey and educational.

You cross 600 million years of evolution, encountering fascinating forms of life. Travel 600 million years in one evening with this new immersive night walk, dedicated to the evolution of life. All the species that are revealed to you here did indeed exist but all have now disappeared. They have come down to us thanks to their fossils, studied among others by the paleontologists of the Museum.

Evolution on the way to enlightenment combines art, science and poetry. You was able to admire past biodiversity while letting yourself be carried away by the magic of the lights. More than a hundred new light structures are to be discovered along a route featuring four geological times. You see “celebrities” from the past, such as dinosaurs, but also little-known species that surprise you with their amazing shapes and unique ways of life.

The origins of life (from -3,700 to -490 million years ago)
The journey begins from Place Valhubert with an immersion in the Precambrian and Cambrian times. Between the formation of the Earth and the first evidence of life, almost a billion years pass! During the following 3 billion years, life remains confidential, and is exclusively marine.

Primary era (from -490 to -250 million years)
The route continues in the Paleozoic. Organisms begin to adapt to the terrestrial environment: first small plants, then animals including insects and vertebrates.

Secondary era (from -250 to -66 million years ago)
In the Mesozoic, there was a boom in biodiversity, especially dinosaurs. These strange, sometimes gigantic “terrible lizards” reigned supreme during the Jurassic and Cretaceous.

Tertiary era (from -66 million years ago to the present day)
The walk ends in the Cenozoic. Intense volcanism and the fall of a gigantic meteorite upset biodiversity. Some species are disappearing, such as “non-bird” dinosaurs and ammonites. Mammals, hitherto very small, become dominant among terrestrial vertebrates and increasingly diverse.
