Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts (京都伝統産業ふれあい館), Approximately 500 items of 74 items of traditional crafts in Kyoto are exhibited. We are exhibiting at any time according to the four seasons, and you can see a variety of traditional craft items.

Displaying 77 sorts of traditional handicrafts, the permanent exhibition systematically introduces the essence of Kyoto’s traditional industries. Using panels and videos, the exhibition also illustrates manufacturing processes and techniques of traditional handicrafts. Visitors can see how to make elaborate artifacts such as yuzen kimono, We also perform demonstrations by craftsmen, Nishijin-ori woven textiles, and lacquerware. About 500 works are on exhibit here, and most of them are available for sale.

The Kyoto Municipal Industrial Museum (Kyoto Rinkou Kankan) is an event venue in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. Known name: Miyako Messe. The building built in 1996 (Heisei 1996) was designed by Kiyoshi Kawasaki and was built as one of the 1200 year memorial events in Heian Chengdu. There are also permanent exhibits (Kyoto Traditional Industry Fureaikan, Japanese Design Museum) and several exhibition halls and conference rooms for events.

The predecessor Kyoto Municipal Industrial Museum was completed in October 1937 (Showa 12) and it was closed on November 30, 1991 (Heisei 3). After that rebuilding was done, the present building was completed on May 8, 1996 (Heisei 1996). The nickname “Miyako Messe” was selected from among 2685 entries as a result of open recruitment as a 1200 year memorial project in Heian Chengdu.

The museum has a collection of books and videos about traditional handicrafts, Kyoto culture, and fine art. Borrowing books are available to residents, workers and students in Kyoto. Watching videos here are available to all visitors.
Event Room
Craft exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops are presented in this room to promote traditional industries. This room also displays young craftsmen’s works, and explores new ideas within these ancient crafts.

Museum Shop Kyo-shion
Visitors can experience Surigata-Yuzen,Kyoto’s stencil-dyeing, and make their own original works in about 45minutes. They can take these items back home.(Pay service ¥900~)

From an array of traditional patterns, visitors can choose their favorite ones.
Popular themes include: Cherry blossoms, Plum blossoms, Camellia, Fireflies, Daimonji mountain, Gion Festival, and kanji (Chinese characters).
ふれあいしょっぷ
This shop offers fascinating goods from Kyoto, such as traditional crafts produced by long established shops and seasonal Japanese items.

And on the third Sunday of every month, we will also host the Maiko stage of Kyoto Flower Street. In the experience corner, you can experience Kyoto’s traditional slime-type Yuzen dye yourself. Why do not you just create your own original crafts.

Experience: 9:30 to 16:00, reservation is required two weeks in advance.
