Unlike conventional runway shows, the unique presentation showcase the design concepts and 2018 FW works of local fashion designers Derek Chan, Aries Sin and Mim Mak, in the form of storytelling set in a theatre-like stage. The stage design, props and story sequence of the FASHIONALLY Presentations are all orchestrated by the designers themselves.

DEMO.: I AM A BOY
Derek Chan wants to express DEMO.’s brand concept fully through this presentation. As a brand dedicated to creating “contemporary classics” inspired by the 1940s and 1950s, DEMO. features a softer masculinity and modern elements such as waterproof fabrics and bold colours, giving classic designs a new twist. Iconic fashion looks are playfully recreated. The mismatch between the nostalgic setting for the presentation and life in the 21st century offers an interesting glimpse into DEMO.’s brand concept.

MODEMENT: Sunset to Dawn
According to the Book of Genesis, God created the heaven and the earth, and called the light “day,” and the darkness “night.” He was the master painter who used the sky as a canvas. Inspired by the beautiful sky she saw during her travels in Europe, Aries Sin attempts to portray at this presentation the changing sky from dawn to dusk. The pieces, which are rich in colour and handcrafted detail, are to be appreciated like paintings.

HANG: OFFICE HOURS
An office provides the backdrop for HANG’s presentation. Designer Mim Mak wants to introduce fun and surprise elements into the otherwise boring workplace. Fascinated with office dynamics, she considers visuals and symbolism a rich source of inspiration. These are used in HANG’s latest collection, which is predominately black, white and red.

FASHIONALLY COLLECTION
On the first day of the fair, FASHIONALLY COLLECTION #11 present the 2018 FW Women’s Wear collections of YEUNG CHIN, phenotypsetter (designer: Jane Ng), 112 mountainyam (designer: Mountain Yam), FromClothingOf (designer: Shirley Wong) and KEVIN HO. Two local creative units, The Spring is Here and Start from Zero, will hold workshops on making Japanese moss balls, otherwise known as kokedama, brooches and wooden tool boxes. The DIY workshops aim to promote the message of nurturing young fashion talents through the use of raw materials.

phenotypsetter: EXPAND & CONTRACT
Expansion and contraction can happen at the same time. Fabric expands and contracts to create volume, layers and space, as well as causing wear and tear.

112 mountainyam: Be The Real Me
Everyone has many “faces”. We often hide our real selves for self-protection. As time goes by, we will lose our true selves. Perhaps we had better take off our masks and show our true selves once more.

KEVIN HO: Oner
Drawing inspiration from Cubism art, Kevin Ho’s seasonal collection features geometric lines and a 3D design, together with a mix of colours, materials, stitching detail and unusual cutting that together make the pieces remarkable.

YEUNG CHIN: ROCK GEISHA
Reinvent Japanese culture and the Kimono. Explore new fashion ideas with inspiration from the kimono.

FromClothingOf: less is more
“Once you have found your value, you realise you don’t need too many things.” The inspiration for this season came when the designer came upon an article about French people needing only a 10-item wardrobe. If that’s the case, how do you create value for each item?

This collection is about exploring the value of the brand through its relationship with the designer. Based on the designer’s past work experience, she infuses details and character from Chinese clothing into the brand. Interestingly, the Chinese dress almost always comes from the same pattern but styling and mix-n-match can make a big difference. So in fact, we really only need 10 items in our wardrobe.
