Hong Kong Fashion Week 2011 Spring/Summer, China

The 18th Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer and Hong Kong World Boutique, last from July 4-7, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The fair feature new zones to attract buyers, showcase the latest brand designs and international fashion.

Hong Kong’s garment and textile industry attracts buyers from around the world because of its high manufacturing standards and flexible trade and sales services, Hong Kong fashion designers are trendsetters who understand the market, making Hong Kong Fashion Week an ideal platform for international business.

Hong Kong Fashion Week host 1,300 exhibitors from 24 countries and regions, including seven group pavilions representing the Chinese mainland,, Macau, Chinese Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea. The United Arab Emirates is taking part for the first time. New product zones Denim Arcade and Handbags Select join the fair’s popular Brand Name Gallery.

Highlight events
Fashion Week special events include “Hong Kong New Design Force,” which takes place on the first afternoon (room N101). Under the theme “Into the Light,” the show features 12 fashion collections by designers who have been winners or finalists in the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest over the past two years. As a show backdrop, local product designers use recycled advertising banners to create unique lighting displays.

Inspired by the rich variety and gentle diffusion of light, the designs for the catwalk play with colour and light — with some of the works saturated, dynamic and explosive as they convey an exuberant mood, while others use soft, pastel, diffused and evanescent elements to evoke peaceful feelings.

Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer hosted a Brand Collections’ show featuring Singapore’s Alleria, Indonesia’s Firmato-Espen Salberg and Macau’s MaConsef. Ika, an Indonesian designer, brought a cooling trend to the show with her as-always incredible collection of fashions that, for Spring/Summer 2011, is taking its inspiration from the oceans of the world. Ika employed oodles of ruffles that cascaded down the fronts of dresses or bounced in layers at hemlines. The ruffles represened the various wavy patterns found in the clams and fish that dwell in the ocean.

The show under the theme “Time of the Tides”, and divided into five waterways: Ujung Kulon, the Galapagos Islands, Isimangaliso, El Vizcaino and Sian Ka’an. Each watery division had its own color scheme and designs. Ika is known for incorporating different fabrics and colors into each dress or piece that turns into a cloth canvas for her creativity. Yellow dresses were swirled with purple strretches of fabric. Blue and green tones swam with pinks and corals.

Throughout the fair, the Designers Love Fur Collection 2011 display, organised by the Hong Kong Fur Federation, takes place in the Hall 1C concourse. A series of fashion parades are also being staged by exhibitors from the mainland, Hong Kong, Chinese Taiwan, India and Indonesia at the Hall 1D Concourse.

Seminars
Highlights also include seminars led by internationally known trend forecasters, including Fashion Snoops, Peclers Paris and WGSN. The first stop in trend-forecasting agency Stylesight’s LIVE Global Trend Tour on 6 July, with speakers from London and New York.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Institute of Textiles & Clothing presents its MA Graduation Fashion Show 2011 on the first evening. On the second day, the fair hosts a Brand Collections’ show featuring Singapore’s Alleria, Indonesia’s Firmato-Espen Salberg and Macau’s MaConsef. The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s School of Continuing of Professional Studies is putting together a student fashion show.
