Hong Kong CENTRESTAGE 2018 FASHIONALLY Designers’ Collection, China

Asia’s premier fashion event, CENTRESTAGE is the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s (HKTDC) signature international fashion fair. This year’s event feature more than 200 international brands over multiple catwalks, engaging fashion forums with industry professionals, insightful talks by esteemed guests, and more.

With a mission to promote Hong Kong’s young designers, online fashion hub FASHIONALLY present FASHIONALLY Collection #12 and FASHIONALLY Presentation shows at CENTRESTAGE 2018, featuring spring/summer 2019 (SS19) collections from 13 local designer labels.

Since its inception in 2012, FASHIONALLY has been presenting FASHIONALLY Collection shows at Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer and CENTRESTAGE each year to showcase the latest collections from emerging Hong Kong talent. FASHIONALLY Collection #12 feature 10 up- and-coming local designers who exemplify Hong Kong’s excellence in creativity and fashion design.

Participating brands include 112mountainyam (designer: Mountain Yam), Blind by JW (designers: Walter Kong and Jessica Lau), CAR | 2IE (designer: Carrie Kwok), DEMO. (designer: Derek Chan), FromClothingOf (designer: Shirley Wong), KEVIN HO (designer: Kevin Ho), LAPEEWEE (designer: Yannes Wong), NECRO POON (designer: Necro Poon), phenotypesetter (designer: Jane Ng) and YEUNG CHIN (designer: Yeung Chin).

FASHIONALLY has also invited winners of the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest (YDC) 2017 to display their latest works at the fair, including a limited-edition capsule collection by Arto Wong available at JOYCE Pacific Place, Sonic Lam’s special wool outfit created in collaboration with The Woolmark Company, and the ete! x YDC Best Footwear Design Award Capsule Collection “I Go to School by Bus” designed by Jason Lee and sponsored by i.t apparels Ltd.

FASHIONALLY Presentation, an unconventional hybrid of fashion show and theatrical play, debuted at Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2018. This edition spotlight three budding Hong Kong labels – Tak Lee, REDEMPTIVE, and YLYstudio – each of which is given complete creative freedom to decorate the stage and direct the presentation around the unique set. Their presentations unveil the designers’ latest SS19 collections while offering a rare glimpse into their creative journeys. These labels are participating in a FASHIONALLY show for the first time.

112 MOUNTAINYAM
Designer, Mountain Yam, earned a Master’s Degree in Fashion Design from the Institute of Textile & Clothing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Yam started his own company MY FASHION INTERNATIONAL LIMITED in 2015. The designer has two labels, a couture made-to-order label MYam Atelier and a ready-to-wear fashion label, 112 mountainyam. In 2014, Yam was awarded 40 under 40 Recognizing High-Flying Design Talents of Today & Tomorrow presented by Perspective Magazine and also received a Dynamic Style Icon Award by Jessica Code Magazine in 2015. In 2016, Yam received a Hong Kong Designer Award from Jessica Magazine. In 2018, the designer is selected representing Hong Kong to participate in the ‘Belt and Road International Young Fashion Designers Showcase Tour’.

112 mountainyam appreciates perseverant and hardworking urban women and aimed to create self-confidence for independent women with stylish fashion collection. The brand uses Pantone 112 as a brand color, expresses a pursuit of vitality and the freedom and courage to explore the attitude of life. Designer Mountain Yam likes to explore contrasting elements, especially enjoying the inspiration from the natural environment and future buildings. The brand’s style artfully combines men’s and women’s silhouettes in its tailoring. This fresh approach, together with the juxtaposition of sportswear and partywear elements, creates the image of a modern woman.

Blind by JW
The designer duo Jessica Lau and Walter Kong founded Blind by JW in 2012. Ms Lau had previously worked with several luxury fashion houses including Alexander McQueen in London, John Galliano in Paris and Diane von Furstenberg in New York. She was named “Best Emerging Fashion Designer 2009” in London by creative group Artstalker. Walter Kong was named Overall Champion at the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest in 2007.

CAR|2IE
Carrie Kwok became a fashion designer since graduated her BA knitwear design in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. After her exploration of production chains in the fashion industry, she recognized that the media also played a key role in shaping the fashion world. Not wanting to limit her experience in fashion field, Carrie became a Fashion Reporter at magazine. With acknowledged of the glamorous media world, she had a chance to study again, she completed her MA in Womenswear Fashion at Middlesex University in London. And worked as intern in Simone Rocha afterward.

Based on both international educational and career backgrounds, as well as her passion for fashion, Carrie launch her own label CAR|2IE in 2016.

FromClothingOf
Shirley Wong was a costume designer for television and film. In 2015 she established her own label with the aim of breaking up the conventional idea about women’s fashion and aesthetics. The name “FromClothingOf” comes from “Exlibris”, meaning “from library of”, i.e. my book. This refers to women claiming the right on how they dress. While minimalist and monotone at first glance, the pieces are meticulously tailored and structured, characterised by layering and fine details that bring out a powerful yet feminine style.

DEMO.
Derek Chan, the brain behind DEMO, walks the fine line between science and art, as he finds a balance in the brand that he established in 2013. Creating “contemporary classics”, his designs are a cross between sartorial traditions and modernity. DEMO rejects the complex rules assigned to menswear today while preserving a nostalgic sentiment. Utilising the soft edges of womenswear silhouette and pairing it with DEMO’s own progressive detailing, Derek has managed to dismantle gender’s strict barriers.

Imbued with an antiquated spirit, an attention to detail and erudite tailoring, classical mens’ and womens’ garments have always been a core source of inspiration at DEMO. Notions of the contemporary and the classical are what make up the very DNA of DEMO., striking a delicate balance between the freedom of contemporary fashion and the traditions of classical dressing styles. One can see this, for example, in DEMO.’s rejection of the complex rules that are assigned to men’s fashion today while, nonetheless, preserving a nostalgic classical menswear look.

KEVIN HO
Kevin Ho graduated from London College of Fashion, majoring in Womenswear. Winner of the Young Designer Contest 2015 Party & Eveningwear Group in 2015, he was subsequently invited by PARCO Japan to participate in the Asia Fashion Collection held during the Tokyo, New York and Taiwan Fashion Week. His namesake label, KEVIN HO, was launched in 2015. He was awarded Design of The Year in 2017 from Hong Kong Fashion Council.

LAPEEWEE
Yannes Wong, a finalist of the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest (YDC) in 2014. She worked at the haute couture brand “Cecilia Yau Couture” after graduated from a local traditional design institution – Caritas Bianchi College of Careers. Yannes launched ladies’ wear label La Peewee in 2013 with partner Wong Hoi Yi (Stephanie).

To her, fashion is not just clothing but an attitude. This is reflected in her designs where clean cuts and A-line dresses express a strong and suave femininity. The use of fabric collages gives each outfit a more textured feel and a sense of playfulness. It strikes a perfect note between strong and gentle – what femininity is about.

NECRO POON
Necro Poon, is the founder and designer of his menswear brand – NECRO POON. Necro grew up in Hong Kong, where he graduated in Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Fashion and Textiles design, Knitwear design with Technology major. After his graduation, he was working in London UK for Aquascutum London as well as Clique London as a fashion designer, middle-sex, menswear and accessories design. In January 2015, Necro joined and won the champion of the biggest fashion design competition in Hong Kong – Hong Kong Young Fashion Designer’s Contest.

At the same year, Necro established the brand – NECRO POON, mainly provide high-end middle-sex and menswear designer products. All of the collections were mainly used of printing and embroidery technique to express the theme about social topics in Hong Kong and around the world. The cutting shows the mood of contemporary and comfortable. Materials are functional which combines with fashion and technology, to build up the value of clothes and fashion.

As an extension of the conceptual basis for his designs, Poon believes that clothing must be wearable and comfortable, that it is clothing first and foremost. To that end, he develops and utilizes technical, functional materials to incorporate into his garments. Poon hopes that all those who wear his designs will feel fashionable yet comfortable, and moreover inspired by his sense of social concern.

phenotypesetter
Jane Ng honed her creativity and craft at the alternatif workshop. Her sense of aesthetic and technical knowledge continued to develop through her participation in hktdc fashion shows and ydc. She started her private label on a part-time basis around 2010, and opened a shop for her brand phenotypsetter at pmq in 2014. A year later, she completed her Master of Visual Arts degree programme (Experience Design) at the Hong Kong Baptist University.

She believes that there should be alternatives in fashion, new and playful approaches to design. She specializes in garment concept, garment construction, fabric manipulation and graphics. Apart from developing her own collection and working on commercial projects, she also participates in creative programmes/open calls.

phenotypsetter stands for an attitude for playful, unconventional, forward and creative concept for clothes. Taking a conceptual approach, phenotypsetter attempts clothes in another shape, construction, material, visual and style, allowing them be made in a witty and novel approach.

Harrison Wong
Harrison Wong made his fashion debut by winning both the Hong Kong Young Designers’ Contest and the Grand Prix Contest in Japan. Since earning a Master’s degree from the London College of Fashion, he has shown his men’s collections in New York, Milan, Shanghai, Taipei, Sydney and Hong Kong. HARRISON WONG is an original contemporary apparel and accessories brand for the urban man. The label specialises in edgy, aggressive designs that also display an understated elegance.

YEUNG CHIN
Yeung Chin was awarded scholarship by The University of Westminster London to study MA in Fashion Design in 2008 and graduated with a scholar of distinction in 2009. He has worked as a Sr fashion designer for Li Ning and Chief fashion designer for G2000. After founding the brand in 2013, he held his personal exhibitions at Asia Society Gallery and Hong Kong Heritage Museum in 2013 and National Design Centre (Singapore) in 2015. YC joined New York Fashion Week in 2015, Hong Kong Fashion Week and Shanghai Ontime Show in 2016 as well as Paris Fashion Week in 2017. YC also received Top Creative Award in the Hong Kong Young Designers’ Contest held by HKTDC in 2003, and YDC Special Mention Award by Hong Kong Design Centre in 2009.

Mistakes are made in our daily lives. Rather than taking it as a failure, we should enjoy the process by treasuring it as a source of creativity. This belief of Yeung Chin made him to establish the brand YC in 2013. Yeung Chin is a brand that observes the real world, defines mistakes and executes them through the collections. By making mistakes and errors in art experiments – painting, photo and sculpture, YC creates specific theme concept made in between, avant-garde to women’s ready-to-wear. It shows boyish silhouette, bold, asymmetric and layering style in the collection.

CENTRESTAGE 2018
Hong Kong CENTRESTAGE is Asia’s premier fashion event, offering a promotion platform for fashion brands and designers to showcase their talent. Events such fashion shows, designer sharing sessions, open talks, trend analyses and networking opportunities, with the objective of connecting local brands with the global fashion industry.

CENTRESTAGE 2018 promises to be the largest edition ever, with a record 230 fashion brands from 22 countries and regions participating. The fair also presents 40 not-to-be- missed events over its four-day run, including more than 20 fashion shows. Fairgoers can also attend designer sharing sessions, industry seminars, networking events and other activities.

The Hong Kong CENTRESTAGE showcase of high-calibre local and overseas fashion talents, and exciting, engaging events was held during the show period. It has created a fashion extravaganza that enables brands to overcome geographical and time limitations to showcase their latest designs to buyers and fashionistas.
