Hoca Ali Rıza

Hoca Ali Rıza (1858 in Üsküdar – 20 March 1930 in Üsküdar) was a Turkish painter and art teacher, known primarily for his Impressionist landscapes and architectural paintings.

Life
He was born in 1858 in the Ahmediye district of Üsküdar district. His father was the elder rider, Mehmet Rüştü Bey. She lost her father, an amateur calligrapher, who was seven years old.

After studying at Üsküdar High School, he entered Kuleli Military High School (Kuleli Military High School) in 1880. While he was in preschool, along with his friend who was interested in art like him, he led the creation of a school in the school by giving honor to Edhem Pasha who was the Minister of Military Schools. Upon this application, he took art lessons from Mehmet Nuri Pasha, who was appointed to the school. The following year, his works were carried out by Sultan II. He was rewarded with Nişan-i Mecidi by Abdülhamid. Upon this encouragement, Rıza Bey and her friends took advantage of Miralay Süleyman Seyyid Bey who returned to Istanbul after studying painting in France and a French painter named Mösye Gués who was in Istanbul at the time.
She continued her education at Mekteb-i Harbiye-i Şahane and became a student of Osman Nuri Paşa in this book. In 1884 he graduated with the rank of Infantry Mülazım-ı Sani (Lieutenant) from the program ın Origin-i Muallim at of Harbiye and was appointed as assistant to his teacher, Osman Nuri Paşa.

Due to his success in student years, he was sent to Naples to study painting, but this decision was abandoned because of the cholera epidemic in Naples. He developed his design knowledge by drawing a glass, a shoe or a table even while sitting. He has prepared three model albums with thirty examples in order to assist the painting courses in the military schools. These printed albums played an important role in spreading the art of painting to the secondary schools. In addition to these studies, he prepared models for civilian schools. These albums, with twenty-four pictures each, were published in Istanbul.

In 1891, he participated in a delegation conducting studies in the first capitals of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1895, he made designs of porcelain at Yıldız Porcelain Factory. He met with Fausto Zonaro the same year and in 1897 he made painting works in Değirmendere.

In 1897, he worked on combat-related pictures depicting the Turkish Greek war. During the Greco-Turkish War, he was a battle painter in Ionia. In 1903, he served on a commission to create the “Türk Esliha-i Antika Müzesi” (Museum of Antiquities). Six years later, he became head of the “Military Publications Office” and served for two years. During those years, he was also chairman of the “Ottoman Painter’s Association “. In 1911, he retired with the rank of Yarbay (Lieutenant Colonel).

Between 1909 and 1912, he was the President of the Society of Ottoman Painters. In 1909, he organized a painting exhibition in Üsküdar İskele Casino. As the publication organ of the Society, he initiated the publication of the monthly newspaper mecmuan (The Society of Ottoman Painters).

Hoca ali Riza, who was a tutor in the Şehzadegan classes in 1910, demanded his retirement from Harbiye after his health deteriorated in 1911 and retired while he was the commander (Lieutenant Colonel).

After he left Harbiye, he worked as a painting teacher in some schools. 1914 Inas Sanayi-i School of Fine Arts ‘ in landscape served as my Muallime. In 1917, he was elected to the board of directors of the Ministry of Education. In 1918, Çamlıca İnas Sultanisi ‘(Çamlıca Girls ‘ High School) Painting Department lasted for three years. 1921 Painting Instructor at the Üsküdar Industrial School, and in 1929 as a Staff at the School of Sultan Amelia in Istanbul. He gave his most important works in Turkish painting to his retirement years. Hoca Ali Rıza, who never sells his paintings even though he has economic problems, has only presented his pictures to his loved ones.

The artist, who describes a large number of Istanbul landscapes with his pencil and watercolor technique in watercolor technique and his fast pace of work, portrays the neighborhoods of the city, Üsküdar to Bebek, Arnavutköy to Burgazada. He died in Üsküdar on March 20, 1930. Her grave is in Karacaahmet.

Collection
His first exhibition was opened three years after his death by his children. The group exhibitions were held in Ankara in 1958 and in Istanbul in 1960. His paintings are distributed to many collections due to his gifts. Most of them are in Süleymaniye Library, Ankara National Library, but there are also many works of Hoca Ali Rıza in the collection of Yapı Kredi Collection, Kemal Erhan, Erdoğan Demirören, İbrahim İter and Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum. His paintings and drawings in his son Nâsır Çizer and his close friend Fuat Şemsi. She was donated to Suleymaniye Library by her student Suheyl Unver, who called her ne forty warehouses h and included interior sketches, small paintings, curiosity scripts, curious motifs, her own ideas, wise words and verses that she liked.

A very comprehensive exhibition including the works of Hoca Ali Rıza was organized in 2014 in İzmir.
