Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, Shizuoka-shi, Japan

The Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art (静岡県立美術館) is a prefectural museum in Shizuoka City, Japan. Founded in 1986, the 9,238.51m2 museum is located on a hill on the northern side of the Nihondaira plateau in the southern part of the city. The 3,024.36m2 domed Rodin wing houses a collection of thirty-two sculptures by French artist Auguste Rodin, including The Thinker, The Gates of Hell, and The Burghers of Calais.

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, located at the foot of verdant Nihondaira, was opened in April of 1986 in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Shizuoka Prefectural Assembly. As “the museum open to everybody”, we have held lectures, workshops, symposiums and concerts, to say nothing of permanent collections and loan exhibitions. The Rodin Wing in which Rodin’s sculptures including “The Gates of Hell”, the 6th cast and six figures of “The Burghers of Calais”, and European sculptures after the 19th century are displayed, was opened in March of 1994. Visitors can appreciate the exhibits, walking around in a bright huge space.We are aiming to enrich our collection, hold exhibitions and promote educational activities further also in future.

Mountains and landscapes in the east and west since the 17th century
Shizuoka Prefecture is surrounded by numerous scenic spots, including Mt. Fuji and Hamanako which represent Japan, with long coastline from Suruga to Suruga Bay and further to Izu Peninsula, good nature port, rich mountains woven by numerous rivers and mountains. It is a collection theme set based on this characteristic. As for the era, since the establishment of Western landscape painting is said to be the seventeenth century, Japanese art is set accordingly.

In Western paintings, Royce Dahl, Turner, Monet, Gauguin, Signac, in Japanese paintings, Kano Inamiya, Ike Majora, Shiba Jiang Han, Tani Fumiyaki, Utagawa Hiroshige, Yokoyama Taikan, in Japanese movies, Yoshimatsu Funeda, Yuzo Saeki, Yuzo Small Genre, Oka Kanosuke etc. , Representative works of the mountain water and landscape paintings painted by the painters who played the respective eras are stored. In addition, it holds unique works depicting landscapes with animals like Itaka Wakaku “Flowers of Flower Birds and Beasts”, which gathers the popularity of many people.

The artworks clearly show the transition of nature perspective. Looking back on its history will also lead to thinking about today’s problems such as nature and human relations and environmental problems. I will continue to work on making such a lively collection.

In addition, since the students of Watanabe Yusuyama were active in the distant area of ​​the Edo period, representative works of South painters such as Fukuda Hanaka and Hirai Shinsaari are also collected. It consists of 347 items including Shosoin and Shosoin documents of the important cultural assets, Emperor Waka song of the late Saga, Ming dynasties of the Fujiwara Futoshiya, ancient and medieval writings, books by Koga Masayoshi, Koga Mamiuchi etc in the Edo era The Kosugi Bunko is collected in the earliest period of the hotel which was transferred to the Fujiie family in Morimachi and received from the same family.

As an art museum that will be born today, I am also working to create a collection that shows the current state of art.

Rodin and Modern Sculpture
In 1988, we purchased six bodies of Rodin “Curry Citizen” as an entrance hall setting work, received a donation of “Thinkers” in 1991, and focused on exhibitions and dissemination activities based on them Because of that, we started interacting with the National Rodin Museum in Paris. In that trend, in 1994, Rodin pavilion Rodin pavilion was newly established. It is now possible to see the representation of a relatively small number of human figures in the hotel collection, with a number of excellent sculptures.

At the Rodin pavilion there are 32 sculptures of Rodin including “Gate of Hell”, “Thinker”, 6 permanent works of sculptors before Rodin such as Rodin’s teacher Karie = Berths and Calpo, Approach to Rodin Hall, Bridge Gallery Published works of sculptors after Rodin such as Maillol, Bourdell, Brancusi are open to the public. It is a collection that can give an overview of the development of modern sculpture history mainly in Rodin.

Speaking of the scenery in Shizuoka prefecture, Mt. Fuji will be listed first. The highest peak of our country, Mt. Fuji has been the object of faith since ancient times, and we can find painting examples in the Heian period quickly. Painting of Mt. Fuji with a long history has a varied variety of variations, including the painting of stories such as “Fuji Pilgrim Mandala Chart” and “Ise Monogatari” that were born in Fuji Faith. In the Japanese paintings, we have collections of works of Mt. Fuji with unique personality such as Taketobu Oshibaru, Kano Tanzani, Tani Fumogi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Yokoyama Taikan, Higashiyama Kaii, etc. Also in Japanese movie, Eiji Wada, Yoshimatsu Goroda There is a painting work.
