Maresme Travel Guide, Barcelona Metropolitan Area, Catalonia, Spain

The Maresme is one of the counties of Catalonia. It is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the river Tordera (north) and the town of Montgat (included in the region, south). On the other side of its northern border, past the river Tordera, is the town of Blanes, where the Costa Brava begins, and past its southern border, beyond Montgat, begins the region of Barcelonès. In addition the Maresme includes part of the natural regions of the mountain ranges of Marina, Montnegre and Corredor. This geomorphological richness makes the Maresme a coastal region with strong contrasts and a great diversity of landscapes.

Located in the east of the country, it stretches across a narrow and elongated strip of territory between the Coastal Range and the coast. Mountain and sea that make us talk about a territory identified with green and blue. A region, moreover, with a privileged climate thanks to the protection of the mountain range. It enjoys a pleasant climate, Mediterranean, clear and bright sky that allows you to enjoy 75% sunny days a year.

The Maresme region, with an area of 398.5 km 2, is one of the seven smallest counties in Catalonia. However, it is the fourth most populous region.

The region is a narrow strip on the slopes and at the foot of the mountains of the Litoral mountain range —serras de Marina, Sant Mateu, del Corredor and del Montnegre (the four now protected as a natural park) – of long, sandy beaches where a series of streams formed in the said mountains. Mataró is the capital and includes towns with a lot of personality and vitality: Vilassar de Dalt, Arenys de Mar, Calella, Canet de Mar, el Masnou, Premià de Mar, Vilassar de MarTordera, among others. The Maresme is made up of a total of 30 municipalities. Its coast is known for tourism as the Costa del Maresme.

The Maresme is a region located between Barcelona and the Costa Brava that combines the richness of an internationally recognized tourist area with beaches of Mediterranean beauty, active marinas, culture, gastronomy and the traditions of its popular festivals with lush vegetation. of the three parks: Serralada Litoral, Montnegre and Corredor; and Serra Marina.

The Maresme is made up of 30 municipalities; 16 coastal and 14 inland and has become a good cultural and leisure alternative. Natural spaces with signposted paths and trails, beaches with multiple services to enjoy the summer, cultural routes and a wide range of museums to visit, leisure companies with original proposals… A gastronomy based on garden and sea products, where the strawberry, the pea, the squid and the wines of the DO Alella stand out, among others. An entire offer based on quality products.

Geography
The Maresme is geomorphologically a coastal area formed by a Hercynian mountain range of the Germanic model, so called because its orography forms peaks and valleys with a balanced alternation. Mostly its mountains are recent and of plutonic materials, usually granite. Its Quaternary plains are made of weathered granite that in the Maresme is popularly known as sauló. This sauló reached the sea with the strong floods of its many streams and torrents has created beaches with a pleasant sandy touch. The Maresme mountains are gentle but high enough to contain the icy winds of the north in winter, which combined with the sea breeze helps to temper the climate.

Despite the geographical coherence and the uniformity of the landscape, until the creation of the regional map of Catalonia of the Second Republic, the current boundaries of the Maresme were not drawn. Until then it had been compartmentalized and encompassed into different geographical, political and administrative units. It is worth noting as an example that these counties have been segmented by two counties, two bishoprics and two notarial and judicial parties.

The Riera de Caldes d’Estrac has traditionally served as a dividing line between the counties and bishoprics of Barcelona and Girona. Currently this watercourse is used to separate the Alt Maresme from the Baix Maresme but traditionally separated the Marina de la Selva from the Marina de Llevant. The historical footprint of this division has greatly marked the mood of the two territories that make up the Maresme and has kept alive the debate on the duality of the region and has often called into question the capital of Mataró and the name of the region.

The presence of relatively high mountains and a short distance from the sea together with the coincidence of a Mediterranean climate of few episodes of rain but strong intensity, has made the presence of streams, rials and torrents common to all peoples. of the region and that all its localities at some point in its history have suffered the violence of the frequent floods.

The Montnegre massif and the Corridor
The Montnegre massif and the corridor are a geological system located in the Coastal Range at the eastern end of the Maresme region bordering and sharing nature with the Vallès Oriental and La Selva. The Argentona and Tordera streams mark their extreme geographical limits, while the Vallgorguina and Arenys streams separate the two massifs. The Montnegre-Corredor massif complex is considered a natural park and is protected by the Barcelona Provincial Council’s Network of Natural Parks.

The Corredor and the Montnegre are a fairly compact set of mountains with a rather gentle relief. Although human activity has shaped some of its spaces, mostly and thanks to the regression of the peasantry, forests are returning to their original exuberance. The Montnegre is a little steeper due to the slate layers of its geology that give a note of color in a mostly granitic environment. The Corridor on the other hand is kinder and of more rounded forms.

The vegetation varies depending on the sunny or shady areas, however, the presence in the Corridor and Montnegre of holm oaks, pines, cork oaks, hazelnuts, chestnuts and shrubs favors the presence of mammalian inhabitants such as the guilla, the wild boar, the cellar rat., the genet, the squirrel, the pheasant, the badger, the weasel, the red mole, the gray dormouse, the roe deer and the mesquer cat; birds such as the bald eagle, the peregrine falcon, the jay or the green woodpecker, the white-throated grebe and the woodpecker; and reptiles such as the green snake, the white snake and the lizard.

The Sierra de Marina or Sant Mateu
The Sierra de Marina or the Sierra de la Conreria, as it has always been called, are the names given to the section of the Catalan Coastal Range between the Coll de Parpers (between Argentona and La Roca del Vallès) to the east. and the river Besòs to the west. If the Montnegre-Corredor Massif closes the region to the eastern part, the Sierra de Marina does so in the western sector, being the point of contact between the Vallès Oriental and the Barcelonès. A series of “island mountains” such as Montcabrer in Cabrils, Burriac in Cabrera de Mar or the Céllecs hill between Órrius and Vilanova del Vallès are very characteristic of this mountain range.

As in the case of the Montnegre-Corredor Massif, the vegetation varies depending on whether we are in the sunny part or the shady part. In the maritime area, the forests of Scots pine, scrub, scrub, heather and aloes abound, while on the slopes of Valles, due to the humidity, holm oaks and oaks predominate, although there is also a lack of scrub, heather rosemary the cat. Reeds, hedgerows and holly abound in torrent areas.

Among the mammals of the mountain range, the king is the wild boar. The guilla, the squirrel, the genet, the pheasant, the cellar rat, the weasel, the red mole, the hedgehog, the badger and the dormouse also abound. gray. In the woods you can find green and white snakes and lizards. Its sky is dominated by the bald eagle, the kestrel, the owl, the jay or the green woodpecker, the gorjablanc, in addition, being the hills of the mountain range place of passage of many species of migratory birds, it is frequent to see -there are many birds such as thrushes that, despite not being native to the area, are not strange to the inhabitants of these lands.

The Serralada de Marina has been affected by several developments that have damaged the ecosystem as well as some quarries that have severely damaged the environment. In order to protect it, the Provincial Council has created the Parc de la Serralada litoral and the Parc de la Serralada de Marina which ensure its protection.

Costa del Maresme
The Maresme coast is the section of the Catalan coast that coincides with the coast of the Maresme region and that covers a total of sixteen municipalities from Montgat to the mouth of the Tordera. It is bordered on the north by the Costa Brava and on the south by the Costa de Barcelona.

It is a coastal strip that stretches between the Mediterranean Sea and the Coastal Range, which protects it from the north winds. The Maresme coast is identified with extensive beaches and golden sand, fishing villages and towns with a long tourist tradition. Characterized by its mild climate and the Mediterranean landscape, it is a residential and tourist area of the first magnitude that in recent decades has hosted many people of metropolitan origin who have moved their first residence.

The region has five marinas and fishing activity is concentrated mainly in Arenys de Mar. For this reason, this town and Sant Pol de Mar have been distinguished as seafaring villages by the Catalan Tourism Agency.

Natural area Costes del Maresme
In front of the Maresme coast lies the Alghero of Mataró which contains some of the best preserved meadows of oceanic posidonia in the country. Its more than 2,900 ha have been integrated since 2006 within the Costes del Maresme protected natural area and in 2014 they were declared a Special Conservation Area (ZEC) by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Posidonia or glass algae is a plant of great ecological importance and very beneficial for marine ecosystems which is the subject of study and dissemination from public-private initiatives in the region such as the Posidonia 2021 project.

Maresme beaches
The Costa del Maresme has a total of 54 beaches and coves that add up to a length of 55 km, most of golden sand with medium and coarse grain.

They range from urban beaches, with all kinds of services, to more natural beaches and away from urban centers. These include those that have been awarded the Blue Flag, others that have been awarded the Biosphere sustainability commitment and others that have been awarded the Q for Tourism Quality. Some resorts have also been certified as Family Beach destinations and offer facilities and services specially designed for family audiences.

Fauna
The fauna of a territory is linked to the vegetation that is present. The alterations and degradation of this will be reflected in a decrease in animal population, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In general, larger animals are the first to be affected; the decline of predators, which find refuge in areas less traveled by man, are remarkable everywhere.

The fauna of the Maresme can be divided into five groups:

The fauna consists of all of beings who live in the same ecosystem, in March, and between them have a relationship that allows food the ecological balance; in the sea we also find birds, many of which live in the region and others that only pass there when they emigrate.
In the wetlands, there is another ecosystem that allows the development of small swimming invertebrates that serve as food for the birds that live there, and also for migratory ones.
In forested areas, there are animals that have adapted to man and his action. Thus, the disappearance of large predators has led to the proliferation of small mammals and the disappearance of crops, the population of birds that feed on them.
Some animals have taken advantage of human presence and cities to find the resources they need to live, as well as being protected from predators.
In farmhouses, there is an ecosystem similar to wetlands, it is one of the places where there is stagnant water and therefore you can find animals similar to those who live there.

Regional history
The Maresme is a corner of a dual world, half terrestrial, half maritime. It is a narrow strip of land with gentle granite mountains that, when it decomposes to form the sandstone, creates the sandy soil that its inhabitants have been working and enjoying for centuries. The history of the Maresme comes from afar and that is why every rock, every pine, every oak, every river, every hill… with the cadence of the comings and goings of the waves echo stories, legends, fables and songs.

The first human settlers of the Paleolithic and Neolithic have left numerous testimonies of their occupation in the region. Megalithic constructions such as the menhirs of the Pedra Llarga of Dosrius or the dolmens such as that of Castellruf de Tiana or that of Roca d’En Toni de Vilassar de Dalt or the enigmatic Table of the Witches of Horsavinyà are quite evident in many places.

There are several archaeological remains: The dolmen of Roca d’en Toni in Vilassar de Dalt, the Iberian village of Burriac (Cabrera de Mar), the Roman remains in Sent-romà (Tiana), the Roman Villa of Can Llauder in Mataró, the Roman aqueduct of Can Cua in Pineda de Mar, etc.

From the age of the metals, more specifically to the horizon of the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age, Iberian culture shone with great force in our country. The Laietans who were the Iberian people who occupied the current Maresme and who organized the territory from the dry capital to the oppidum of Ilturo in Burriac (Cabrera de Mar).

The arrival of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC, at the height of the war with the Carthaginians, led to the establishment of some military detachments to occupy a territory that had traditionally been closely linked to the Phenopun trade. And shortly afterwards, Laietania became a permanent settlement for the Romans to establish trading posts or to use the old retired legionaries for the conquered lands. This is how the city of Iluro (Mataró) was founded, which together with the neighboring Baetulo (Badalona) Blandae (Blanes) organized the whole territory through the centuriation around the Via Augusta that connected Rome with Gades (Cádiz). The Roman trace is very clear in the region, especially in industrial establishments such as the Teià Wine Cell,

The Middle Ages caused a demographic decline and a movement of the population to new nuclei less coastal and more sheltered from the dangers of the sea and led to the birth of the villages we know today as Munt or Dalt. There is little evidence of the passage of Muslims between 711 and 801 in the region, in fact only a few place names are the result of Islamic heritage. The conquest of the region by the Franks forever marked the future of the territory by establishing in the Caldes d’Estrac stream the boundary of the counties and bishoprics of Barcelona to the south and Girona to the north. From then on, the territory remained administratively separated, linking the towns and people of the Upper Maresme in Girona and those of the Baix Maresme in Barcelona.

The Riera de Caldes has been the point of separation of the region since the Carolingian conquest around 800. What was born with a political and ecclesiastical administrative will at the time of the Frankish conquest, during the Middle Ages fossilized separating the territories of the viscounty of Cabrera in the Alt Maresme area from the areas of royal ownership of the house of Barcelona in the Baix Maresme. Pope Alexander III, in 1169, sealed this separation that would become historic, confirming that the territories north of the river were under the tutelage of the bishop of Girona and those located in the south were under the pastoral observation of the prelate. Barcelonan.

In the lower Maresme, small feudal lords distributed the territory that gradually passed under the control of large bourgeois families in Barcelona. In the high Maresme, the territories became part of the Viscounty of Cabrera, which promoted the population of the coast around Blanes and Calella.

In the 15th century, with the abolition of the servitude of the gleva, the coastal area began to be repopulated and the defense towers began to proliferate in response to maritime aggression and the futility of defending the peasant interests of the military feudal lords. Also at the end of this century many localities freed themselves from feudal power and joined the streets of Barcelona as is the case of the town of Mataró and the parishes of Argentona Cabrera, Vilassar and Premià ending what during those last bars of the fifteenth century had been the Barony of the Maresme and which brought together the lords of the castles of Mata and Vilassar-Burriac.

Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Maresme economy prospered remarkably as the Maresme became the wine suppliers of the Spanish imperial armies, then obstinate in defending their interests in the Netherlands and occupied in such long or sterile wars with the French and English..

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Maresme exported wine and brandy by land and sea, as well as lace and rand, glass products and even watches. With the Decree of Free Trade of Charles III, many Maresmen embarked on the career of trade with America, many settled there and many others began important sagas of sailors and pilots. From the commercial profits, an incipient cotton industry was soon born in the 19th century, which remained very much alive until the 1970s.

The industrial and commercial vitality of the Maresme and its remarkable demographic growth allowed on the one hand that the coastal zones were populated and that many towns of friction to sea separated from their mother towns of above or mountain as it would be the case of Montgat, Masnou, Premià de Mar, Vilassar de Mar etc and on the other, the arrival of the communications revolution first with the railway that first connected Mataró with Barcelona in 1848 and later united the capital of the region with Arenys de Mar and Tordera-Blanes. In the coming years, fishing and marinas were built throughout the east of the region and since 1969 the Maresme was once again a pioneering place now it was the turn of the arrival of the first toll motorway.

In the field, the arrival of electricity led to a revolutionary change that took place from the historical expanses of dryland agriculture where the vineyards, cereals, olive trees and orange groves, with an alternation of grains, have reigned since the darkness of time. barren areas to a new irrigation paradigm that used irrigation through electric vents. With the arrival of water in all corners of the region, the cultivation of potatoes soon turned the Mataró Potatoes designation of origin into the main product of the Maresme vegetable garden. The organization of the exploration of the Royal Kidney tuber variety caused a resurgence in the articulation of the peasantry and local unions that founded the Federation of Coastal Agricultural Unions (FSAL) to manage exports and sales, especially in French markets., Germans and English. This international trade allowed the peasantry to acquire many profits and remarkably modernized the sector. In the 50’s little by little the potato was replaced by the cultivation first of the carnation, then the rose and later e all kinds of cut flowers and nursery plant fact that turned the fields into large expanses of greenhouses and went cause the founding of the Florimar union that brought together the interests of florists.

From the beginning of the 20th century, the phenomenon of summering took place, which varied from the second residences of the Barcelona bourgeoisie to places such as Caldes d’Estrac, Vilassar de Mar, Argentona and Canet de Mar, among others. of the large hotel complexes and camping areas in Calella, Pineda de Mar, Palafolls, Santa Susanna and Malgrat.

The industrialization of the region and the conversion into a summer resort of the Barcelona and Catalan bourgeoisie turned the Maresme into a territory rich in modernist architecture, linked to the first works of the most important architects of that movement: Lluís Domènech i Montaner (Canet de Mar), Josep Puig i Cadafalch (Mataró and Argentona) and Antoni Gaudí (Mataró and Alella). Among the routes offered by the municipalities are, without a doubt, the Modernisme routes linked to Canet de Mar, Mataró and Argentona. Each municipality offers free or audio-guided routes to discover the heritage of the Maresme.

Dalmau Park anti-aircraft shelters
The anti-aircraft shelter in Dalmau Park was put into operation in 1937, months after the Municipal Committee, on November 2, 1936, decided to create shelters to protect the civilian population from aerial bombardment. Three shelters were built in the city: the first in the Roser mountain, the second in the Parc dels Pins or Dalmau park and the third called La Granja. All three had a total capacity of 3,600 people, just half the population of Calella at that time. The population was distributed among the three shelters according to the street where they lived; each of the shelters had three access doors to facilitate access and prevent congestion. Calella City Council, in collaboration with the Democratic Memorial, restored and signposted the Dalmau Park Anti-Aircraft Shelter to make it visitable, the space was inaugurated on April 11, 2010 and included in the Network of Memory Spaces of Catalonia. The section of mines accessed during the visit, about 40 meters, runs through an underground gallery that was reinforced to facilitate access and ensure security, as well as an anti-aircraft shelter. A complex system of galleries was explained that served to supply water to the local population. Excavations began in El Masnou (former municipal districts of Alella and Teià) from the 18th century onwards to capture and collect water that seeped into the subsoil and channel it to the tanks and laundry of the houses. This supply system responded effectively to the lack of continuous watercourses in the territory. The result was a network of 28 galleries that cover 27 km through the Masnou subsoil.

The most characteristic grape variety of the DO Alella is the white raisin, although we also find whites with white Grenache, Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, among others. On the other hand we find aromatic rosé wines, with Grenache, Merlot and raisins and, in smaller quantities, reds made with the varieties Merlot, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo, as the most representative.

With a large part of the surface cultivated in peri-urban areas, the DO Alella enjoys a Mediterranean climate, very close to the coast, quite humid and with a soil of easy drainage and that retains the solar radiations. Between tradition and urbanity, the vineyards are rocked by the sea breeze, as they scratch ground and dig their roots into the ground. The Alella Designation of Origin is the smallest in Catalonia and one of the smallest in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. The area of vineyards is 227 hectares, there are about 50 winegrowers and 8 bottling wineries and the average annual production is 4,000hl.
