Art Paris 2020, after postponed, reopened at the Grand Palais September 11-13, 2020, confirm Paris’ unique dynamic and its place in the world contemporary art market, a moment full of art to see and people to meet. Art Paris 2020 faithful to its tradition of artistic diversity and openness. New galleries, established artists, upcoming talents: the entire spectrum of contemporary art was represented at the fair.

Art Paris 2020, the leading modern and contemporary art spring event, truned to online in mid-July, which aim to support galleries and their artists after a spring period at a standstill. Art Paris’s profile was updated throughout the event with original and unique new content. In September, a more opportune time to reopen, the fair organized an offline version to foster collaboration and exchange in the art world.

This edition of the fair, which can be qualified as an act of perseverance, reflects Art Paris desire to support and showcase the work accomplished by galleries. Galleries to get back to work and meet their collectors. It is just as important for their artists. The advantage of Art Paris is that it is above all a local and regional fair with a large majority of French galleries. 75% of visitors to the fair come from the Paris region or other areas of France, therefore, in-person communication is essential.

For its 22nd edition, Art Paris bringing together 112 galleries from 15 different countries in an art fair that combines a regional exploration of European art from the post-war period to the present day with a cosmopolitan approach to art from other geographical horizons. Art Paris has a strong editorial line that is expressed throughout the fair’s different themes and sectors and which aims to encourage discovery and rediscovery. In so doing, it fosters passion for art in all its forms in a beautiful and convivial setting.

Art Paris remains faithful to its tradition of artistic diversity and openness. Thanks to a dazzling selection of exhibitors marked by the arrival of leading art galleries. Both regional and cosmopolitan, Art Paris plays host to large, prestigious galleries alongside small independents mainly from Europe. The brilliant younger generation of gallerists also features prominently, thereby confirming the fair’s vocation to discover new talent.

This edition reflects the desire to support the galleries when they and the artists they represent are in particular need of help. Several measures have been put in place, for example the payment of the remaining balance will not be requested before the fair and exhibitors may even choose to pay in several instalments, up until the end of the year if necessary. Additionally Art Paris create a support fund to which it undertakes to give all the proceeds of ticket sales. The fund will provide concrete help to young galleries exhibiting at the fair that are in difficulty because of the crisis.

Highlights
Art Paris has established itself as a major Art fair for Modern and Contemporary art. French Scene
Since 2018, Art Paris has consistently supported the French contemporary art scene by inviting curators to lend a subjective, historical and critical eye on a selection of specific projects by French artists presented by participating galleries.. In “Common and Uncommon Stories”, independent curator and art critic Gaël Charbau brings together the work of 20 artists, most of which were born in the 1980s, responding to the notion of the narrative and the ambiguous interplay between singularity and universality in storytelling. He has also been invited to write a text presenting each artist and their work.

Southern Stars: An Exploration of the Iberian Peninsula
Following its extensive survey of the Latin American scene in 2019, Art Paris turns to the Iberian Peninsula presenting “Southern Stars: An Exploration of the Iberian Peninsula”, that brings light to Spanish and Portuguese art from the 1950s to the present day. 18 galleries are presenting works by a selection of 50 artists – from modern masters to contemporary artists. In parallel, projects including a video programme, site-specific installations, and conferences at the Instituto Cervantes and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Paris will highlight the creative effervescence flourishing in this part of Southern Europe.

Promises
“Promises”, a sector focusing on young galleries created less than six years ago, provides a forward-looking analysis of cutting-edge contemporary art. I Purposefully placed at the very heart of the Grand Palais, “Promises” sector hosts 14 young galleries from Abidjan, Brussels, Lima, Lisbon, Sofia, Marseilles and Paris, many of which will be exhibiting at Art Paris for the first time this year. The galleries will explore rarely represented art scenes, from Europe – in particular Bulgaria at Structura Gallery (Sofia); Africa, with 31 Project, Afikaris, Galerie Véronique Rieffel (Paris/Abidjan) and Septieme Gallery; and Latin America, represented by Galerie Younique (Lima/Paris). The galleries will each be presenting between one and three emerging artists – and benefit from financial sponsorship from the fair.

Solo Show
Since 2015, Art Paris has encouraged the presentation of monographic exhibitions in “Solo Show”, a key moment in artists’ careers – by inciting galleries to present specific single artist-focused projects. The 2020 edition will feature 21 solo shows distributed throughout the fair, allow visitors to discover or rediscover in depth the work of modern, contemporary or emerging artists.

Art Paris Digital
Art Paris is pleased to announce an evolution online edition of the fair will be presented. Art Paris was updated throughout the event with original and unique new content. Art Paris has also used different digital tools and applications to produce a virtual visit of the fair that will immerse visitors in each gallery’s unique environment. Immersion 3D has created a virtual visit of the exhibition spaces of our Paris-based galleries, whereas Online Viewing Room presents an immersive 3D visit of the galleries’ booths recreating the real-life experience of visiting the fair under the glass roof of the Grand Palais.
