Czech Classicist architecture

While the late Baroque period in the Czech Republic is primarily associated with the reign of Maria Theresa (1740 – 1780), after her death, this style is increasingly being replaced by Classicism and finally Empire style. Přechod from Baroque to Classicism announces the reconstruction of Prague Castle Vienna architect Nicolo Pacassi. At him and Kilian Ignac Dientzenhofer builds Ignaz Jan Nepomuk Palliardi, in which the home has high baroque tradition blends with a classical décor. With Pacassi’s work, whose castle reconstruction was realized, with the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer of Erlachis related to Antonin Haffenecker, another architect who has worked on Baroque forms of classicism (the Estates Theater).

Throughout the Austrian Empire, and also in the Czech lands that were part of it, like other countries in this unusual realm, there were not very suitable conditions for the similarly successful development of Classicist architecture, as in France or Russia. Only a few more significant buildings arose, as if the building power had to a large extent exhausted during the Baroque period. In the Czech Republic we practically do not find a building from the early Classicist period. The reason for the slow development was the ideals of the Enlightenment, which, at least in art and architecture, had the character of limiting the old, rather than developing a new one. For the reign of Maria Theresacompulsory schooling has been introduced, which has definitely been an asset in educating the population of the empire. Still more determined in further reforms, her son Emperor Joseph II continued. During his reign, the so-called Josephine reforms took place, where hundreds of churches and monasteries were destroyed throughout the Empire, entire orders dissolved, and deserted buildings were transformed into offices, public hospitals, or barracks. In the Austrian Empire, a more important layer of burgess developed slowly, which, despite some sympathy, was not strong enough to enforce the changes and end the remnants of feudalism, because the atrocities that have been made in revolutionary France have come to an end. That is why classicism was also impeded in the Czech lands and manifested sporadically and in the case of less important buildings.

The development of Classicism from the Baroque is quite good, as it gradually drops from the figural ornaments and the richness of the ornaments is receding, to the late classicist buildings that go through a rather austere line of empire buildings.
