Alizarin crimson color

Alizarin crimson is a red color that is biased slightly more towards purple than towards orange on the color wheel. It is named after the organic dye alizarin, found in the madder plant, and the related synthetic lake pigment alizarin crimson (PR83 in the Color Index).

The alizarin carmine is prepared by precipitating synthetic alizarin (organic pigment derived from anthracene) on a neutral base of aluminum trihydrate. This results in a semi-dark red lacquer, transparent, with good permanence. With different bases different shades of red are achieved.

The alizarin carmine was used as a component of paintings for artistic use until the 1930s.

Ancient Egyptians used to make pink-red textile paints the crushed root of the plant madder dye (Latin Rubia Tinctorium). Later, this dye was sometimes used in Renaissance painting, but was considered weak. In the 19th century, the mordant dye called crapp was still widely used in the textile industry, but by the end of the century, thanks to the development of organic chemistry, several new “aniline” dyes appeared that quickly conquered the market. Among them, chemists synthesized the main coloring substance of the madder, called Alizarin red. Synthetic dye due to cheapness, affordability and increased durability has become an excellent substitute for the dye obtained from plants. In the palette of artists, he became a source of purple (with a mixture of blue) and black with a mixture with dark green greens Guinier.

Alizarin crimson paint was frequently used on Bob Ross’ TV show, The Joy of Painting.
