Adomas Galdikas

Adomas Galdikas (Oct 18, 1893 – Dec 7, 1969) was a Lithuanian painter, graphic artist, scenographer

Galdikas attended painting studios in Saint Petersburg and Berlin Galdikas continued his studies in Sweden, Italy and France He studied in a gymnasium in Palanga, then in a grammar school in Libau In 1917 he graduated from the Central School of Technical Drawing of Baron Stieglitz in St Petersburg He became the first Lithuanian etorist

In 1918 he returned to Lithuania In 1918-1920 she taught at the teachers’ seminary and gymnasium in Kaunas

In 1923, after returning to Lithuania, he founded his own graphics studio in Kaunas, where he worked until 1940 At the same time he was also lecturing at the Kaunas Art School During World War II Galdikas was a professor at the Kaunas Applied Arts Institute Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas was among his students From 1946 to 1947 Galdikas lectured as a professor in Freiburg im Breisgau (École des Arts et Métiers) In 1947 Galdikas moved to Paris, and in 1952 to the United States He settled in New York, where he lived until his death

Since 1920 Galdikas participated in art exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad Galdikas also illustrated books and created scenography for 19 plays at the Kaunas State Theater He has also designed a number of interbellum Lithuanian postage stamps, bonds and paper litas banknotes In Germany, France and the United States he worked mainly as painter

In 1921 and 1923 he perfected in Berlin, continued his artistic education in Sweden, Italy and France

He successfully participated in competitions for the creation of stamps, shares of the Commercial and Industrial Bank and the Society of Steamships Since 1920 he participated in art exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad Personal exhibitions were held in Kaunas (1924, 1928), Paris (1931, 1948), Freiburg, New York (1954, 1957, 1960), Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Cleveland, retrospective exhibitions in Lithuania 1969, 1973, 1977, 1983)

He painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, abstract compositions The author of prints, illustrated books He created scenery for seventeen performances of the State Theater in Kaunas , among the most significant theatrical works, in addition to “Sharunas” Kreve – the opera Grazhina by Jurgis Carnavicius (1933)

Galdikas works are kept in the Museum of Applied Art of the St Petersburg State Art and Industrial Academy named after A L Stieglitz, the Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius, the National Art Museum named after MK Čiurlionis in Kaunas, the Latvian National Art Museum in Riga, in the gallery Named after M K Čiurlionis in Chicago and other meetings
